Garden Guest: Tired Tiger?

The north side of our front yard is a certified  National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat.  Really!  We have a certificate!  You can do the same by providing food, water, cover and places for wildlife to raise their young.  It is so much fun to see all of the critters that stop by for a visit.  I have a series of posts to show you our Garden Guests.  If you would like to see more posts like this one, please hop over to my Garden Page.

When these shots were being snapped, the creamy color made me think this beauty was a Zebra Swallowtail.

During editing though, I think the gorgeous butterfly is a tired Tiger Swallowtail.  Notice how ragged the wing edges are.  (Please feel free to correct me as I don't always get the ID quite right!  These photos were taken in October.)

It was moving very slowing along the grass, but never held still.

What's happening in your back yard?

  1. Good Morning Marci, I love the fact that you are promoting wild life habitats in the garden. We have nesting boxes for small birds to roost during winter time. We have also made bug huts for lone bees and other insects to hibernate during winter time. Insects and birds are so important that we must help all we can.
I wonder if the tiger swallowtail is enjoying a little sunshine. You have captured a lovely moment.
    Best Wishes

  3. That's really great. Three nights ago I heard a thump on the front deck. I used a flashlight through the sliding glass door and there was a Pine Marten looking back at me. He didn't seems to afraid of the light. One night he got up on the metal roof. That wasn't so cute. - Margy
