Old Fort Hays

We just returned from our trip to Colorado!  Prepare to see tons of vacation photos!  ;-)

First Stop:  Hays, Kansas

These photos are from Old Fort Hays.

Click HERE for the museum's link!  Talk about the Wild Wild West!  This town is rich in frontier history and has documented it very well.  There are several plaques throughout downtown noting sites of popular saloons and prominent homes, as well as shootouts.  One of our favorite restaurants is Gella's Diner and Lb Brewing Company on 11th Street in Hays.

While we were touring all the historical buildings of the fort, there was no disk in the camera.

{Sad Face}

If you like frontier history, it was a very interesting self guided tour.  We love that kind of stuff!

The herd of buffalo were sort of like big puppies!  They came right to the car.  We didn't feed them anything, but they acted like they frequently get treats from tourists!

What is your favorite era of American History?

Natural Falls State Park, A Favorite Hiking Spot

One of our favorite hiking destinations is Natural Falls State Park near Colcord, Oklahoma.

You'll notice these photos are taken on a couple of different visits.

The name of the park has changed, but the old sign is still onsite.

There is short hike to the falls that is completely handicap accessible along with multiple longer trails.

Some cover pretty rugged terrain.

Where do you enjoy hiking?

Book Review: Everyday Fashions of the Forties

As Pictured in Sears Catalogs

Edited by JoAnne Olian

1053913

A Partial Synopsis from Good Reads:  Few publications illustrate so comprehensively what American men, women, and children wore in the 1940s than the Sears catalogs of those years, when the company's fashions typified the tastes of the American mainstream. This book is a compilation of 122 fully illustrated and captioned pages selected and reproduced from rare copies of Sears catalogs of the World War II era.

My Thoughts:  What a fun little picture book of vintage fashion!  I had to smile at the ballerina dresses.  Fit and flare is a flattering classic look to this day!

What are you reading?

Gardening Update

Way back in April, I published THIS SPONSORED POST about packets I received from Mary's Heirloom Seeds.  Would you like an update on the Lemon Cucumber?  ;-)  First off, I would like to mention I experienced EXCELLENT germination rates.  Most plants were given to family and friends, keeping only a couple for my small vegetable garden.

Take a look at these beauties!  From only two plants, there are plenty of cukes to enjoy sliced and in every kind of salad and sandwich imaginable!  We have also become cucumber philanthropists!  Our neighbors love them, too!

This variety is Lemon Cucumber, a lovely little yellow heirloom.  The flavor is very mild.  This is our first year to try them and we have learned to pick them as they just begin to turn yellow and are about the size to hold in the palm of your hand.  That's when we like them best!  Can you see all the blooms?  This is a workhorse of a plant!

'Sending a big

THANK YOU

to our little pollinator friends and to Mary's Heirloom Seeds for an overflowing basket of cucumbers!

What have you been harvesting?
