Garden Guest: Ruby Crowned Kinglet

The north side of our front yard is a certified  National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat.  Really!  We have a certificate!  You can do the same by consistently providing food, water, cover and places for wildlife to raise their young.  It is so much fun to see all of the critters that stop by for a visit.  I've begun a series of posts to show you our Garden Guests.

This winter has been harsh.  We've had snow after snow.  Birds are coming to our feeders that we haven't seen before.

I had noticed this tiny bird for the first time during the latest series of snowstorms and, in error, thought it was a small-ish goldfinch.  It prefers suet, though.  That should have been a clue.  Goldfinches tend to prefer sunflowers or thistle.

One morning while filling feeders, this diminutive visitor stayed nearby and I noticed the red feathers on top of the head.  I raced inside and grabbed the camera.  After snapping enough shots to cross reference, out came National Audubon Society's Field Guide to North American Birds.

I think this is a Ruby Crowned Kinglet!  If I'm wrong, by all means, please let me know!  I'd love to know more about this lovely new friend!  Any information would be appreciated!

How about a little bloggin' music?  Does anyone remember the movie, Ice Castles?  'One of my favorite theme songs!

  1. I got the official "Backyard Wildlife" book years ago and it was so interesting, a whole new way to think about gardening. You've inspired me to re-read it and apply for certification this summer!
