Garden Guest: Common Nighthawk

The north side of our front yard is a certified  National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat.  Really!  We have a certificate!  You can do the same by providing food, water, cover and places for wildlife to raise their young.  It is so much fun to see all of the critters that stop by for a visit.  Children love it!

I didn't notice the cicada shell until editing.  Do you see it on the tiny twig against the trunk?  As a child we called the shells "crunch bugs" for the sound they made when smashed.

I have a series of posts to show you our Garden Guests.  If you would like to see more posts like this one, please hop over to my Garden Page.

We do see beautiful Nighthawks in our garden, but these photos were actually taken at Shattuck Windmill Museum by my Handsome Husband.  Their feathers blend so well with the bark, it's easy to miss them.  You might notice a bump on a log, but not realize it's actually a Nighthawk.

What's happening in your back yard?

  4. We have a closely related species called a nightjar in Europe but I have never been lucky enough to see or even hear one as they are rare and very shy. However we have loads of other birds at Eco-Gites of Lenault where I live in France including some rarities such as black storks, hoopoes, merlins and black woodpeckers. We are incredibly lucky with the amount of wildlife here and I never cease to get a buzz from seeing it.
A lovely wildlife post to add to #GoingGreen - thank you and I love the idea of the National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat designation.

  5. What a fab garden visitor! I love this backyard habitat certificate idea, something I'll be working towards this kind of thing when I get my own garden, though we don't have the certificate in the UK. #GoingGreen
