The north side of our front yard is a certified National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat. Really! We have a certificate! You can do the same by providing food, water, cover and places for wildlife to raise their young. It is so much fun to see all of the critters that stop by for a visit. I've begun a new series of posts to show you our Garden Guests.
If you would like to see more, check my Gardening Page!
This handsome fellow is a male goldfinch. You can see he is eating black oil sunflowers from a tube feeder, but these tiny birds also love thistle feeders. Their favorite option though is grazing through the flower beds. Fading purple coneflowers (Echinacea) have tons of seeds for the goldfinches to nibble. Remember, the key to habitat gardening is adding native plants to your landscape!
And now for some blogging music. My Handsome Husband has been singing this to me lately.

ReplyDeleteAmazing picture!!!

That is a fabulous picture! I love goldfinches and purple ones too! Our finches are fading fast. I always love that first flash of color when they brighten up in the spring!
ReplyDeleteThx for sharing on Creative Home and Garden hop. Nice photo of the goldfinch, and thank you so much for advising people to plant native plants in their gardens! Funny you mentioned purple coneflower seeds, as I just wrote a post on the importance of leaving seed heads for birds, and mentioned that plant as a great one for finches. Check it out here if interested: http://ouroneacrefarm.com/leave-seed-heads-wildlife/
ReplyDeleteAs a fellow bird lover ( and photographer of them when I get the chance ) I love your sweet little finch photo! :)
ReplyDeleteThe bird feeder outside my kitchen window brings many sweet-faced birds to my yard. I love watching them all, but you're right, the bright flash of a goldfinch adds a delightful splash of color. Mine prefer the sunflowers to thistle.
