Home Sweet Home State

How many of you are fans of the game show, Wheel of Fortune?  One of my favorite categories is called "Before and After".  I've always wanted to be Vanna White.  She seems so elegant!

Today's project is a craft challenge with these lovely bloggers:

Home Sweet Home State

Last Spring, I was completely smitten by the gorgeous toss pillows at Target.  Click HERE to see my post about them!  I've enjoyed all of those gold ones but wanted to add some more colors to the palette.

You've seen me do this kind of thing before, upcycling what I have into something I want!  Today, what I have is a scruffy T-shirt, a ratty tank top and a red gingham queen size sheet.

Oh, how I've loved wearing these shirts!  It's hard to say just how many times they've been worn and washed.  Can you see how incredibly soft they are?  Fabric this tattered can be difficult to sew.

First step is turning the shirt inside out and laying it as neatly as possible.  Next step is pressing on fusible interfacing.  Once this is cooled, flip the shirt right side out.

I always struggle with where to cut, so I experiment with chalk until I finally reach a decision.  Chalk lines can easily be wiped away with a damp cloth.  I can change my mind as many times as I like!

Using THIS PATTERN, my tried and true, FAVORITE PATTERN from Noodlehead, pieces are cut from the gingham sheet for the pillow covers.  Then I applique' my home state onto the panel for the front.  I love the unique shape of Arkansas, my home sweet home state!

Here's the floral T-shirt.

And here's the tank top.

Remember where we began?

Let's take a look at everyone else's projects!

  3. I love this upcycle idea! I have turned a few of my son's shirts into pillows for him and I completely agree that sometimes the hardest part was deciding where to cut!

  6. I made t-shirts into cushions like this but without the stabiliser, it was so much more difficult to stitch so the way you've done it, especially for very old soft t-shirts, is such a good idea! I love the flowery one.
I've always loved how you have state shaped stuff in the US, we just don't do that here in the UK. If I had a t-shirt or cushion with the West Midlands on it I'm pretty sure no one would have any idea what it was!!!
