A Tutorial for Bible Journaling Simple Circle Flowers

Zephaniah 3:17  NKJV  The Lord your God in your midst, The Mighty One will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.

Zephaniah 3:14  CSB  Sing for joy, Daughter Zion; shout loudly Israel!  Be glad and celebrate with all your heart, Daughter Jerusalem!

If you are unfamiliar with Bible journaling or Bible illustrating, this is best explanation I've ever heard.  Bible journaling is an act of worship.  I offer my scribbles as a gift to my Father in heaven.

Quick explanation:  This page was begun before dawn.  Since I am an early bird (of course) I married a night owl!  Handsome Husband was still sleeping soundly, so I was trying to be quiet in the kitchen.  Lighting is kind of odd and shadowy in some of my first photos.

I'm using:  Illustrating Bible from Dayspring, ModPodge, washi tape, Distressed Oxide in blue and green, a regular pencil, three colors of acrylic paint, one 05 black micron pen, one 005 red micron pen, one flat paint brush and one small round paint brush.

I've seen this type of illustration called "Fried Egg Flowers" and also "Lollipop Flowers".  I think of them as roses or peonies.  It's hard to say how long it took me to feel comfortable creating them.  It's also hard to say how many tutorials I've watched and attempted some with and some without success.  I definitely need to give credit to Scribbling Grace and to Bible Journaling Ministries for giving me the courage to begin this type of worship.

Here's one more look at the finished page.

Let's get started!

I begin by protecting my page.  If you don't have gesso or gelato, ModPodge works, too.  My page was covered in ModPodge and allowed to dry.    I actually began to journal verse 17, but when I read the whole passage, I loved verse 14, too!  Washi tape covers my verses so that part will remain white.

Next I used Distressed Oxide in blue on the upper left and soft green on the lower right, which is hard to see in the pre dawn lighting of my kitchen.

I've had this set of clear nesting bowls in my kitchen for about twenty years or so.  Since I struggle with proportions, these work GREAT when I need slightly different sized circles.

Those weird shadows in the photo are bugging me, but you get the idea.  Three bowls that are different sizes, with one just a little off the page.  I pencil around the bowls as lightly as possible.

The three circles get a couple coats of red acrylic paint.  I'm not worried about these being perfect circles, but want to cover any pencil marks.

Next, leaves are free handed here and there in a nice warm green.  I add lines of the same green to the center of my flowers with the same flat brush.  Notice also, that with any paint used, I make a few random dots here and there.

Using a small round brush, soft yellow dots are added to the center of  the red circles on top of the green lines.  I also mix yellow and green paint to create veins for each leaf.

Shall we add some petals to those flowers?  I mixed a little yellow and red paint together.  With the small round brush, I begin by making a few small curves around the center yellow dots.  I don't begin with a specific number of brush strokes.  Sometimes there are two, sometimes four.  This time I happened to use three.

Here's the next row of petals.  Don't get too worried about your small curves being a specific size.  All flowers are unique, just like us!  ;-)

Do you get the idea?  The outer petals begin and end at about the middle of the petals in the row ahead of them.

Keep making petals to the edge of your rose and then repeat on the other two!

We are almost finished!  Using a black 05 micron pen, I outlined the leaves and along their veins.  A few small circles were drawn in the center of my rose.  In hopes of creating a bit of a shadow, I drew black lines on the inside of each petal.

That's it!  I pulled away the washi tape and underlined verse 14 and verse 17 using a red 005 micron pen.

I hope you enjoyed the step by step instructions of this Bible journaling page.  Please let me know what you think!
