Book Review: Beatrix Potter's Gardening Life

The Plants and Places that Inspired the Classic Children's Tales

by Marta McDowell
Partial synopsis from Good Reads:  There aren’t many books more beloved than The Tale of Peter Rabbit and even fewer authors as iconic as Beatrix Potter. Her characters—Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle Duck, and all the rest—exist in a charmed world filled with flowers and gardens. In Beatrix Potter’s Gardening Life, bestselling author Marta McDowell explores the origins of Beatrix Potter’s love of gardening and plants and shows how this passion came to be reflected in her work.

My Thoughts:  I must admit to being a gardener as well as a big fan of Beatrix Potter.  Peter Rabbit in his little blue jacket will always be a favorite fictional character.  This is a lovely book filled with Beatrix Potter's gorgeous water colors and photographs.  It's a wonderful tribute to her favorite outdoor spaces.  I especially loved seeing her garden photographs beside her beautiful illustrations of the same plants.

What have you been reading?

  2. I grew up with Peter Rabbit and lots of other children's books. My mother was a kindergarten teacher. I remember bath time as a very small child. She would tell me the story she read to her students earlier in the day. She decided not to teach me to read at home so that when I entered kindergarten I would be in step with my peers. Despite her efforts I was able to "read" favourite books because I memorized each page. I still love reading. - Margy
