A partial synopsis from Bas Bleu: With no family or friends to speak of, eighty-eight-year-old Maud lives in contented solitude in a spacious apartment in Gothenburg, Sweden. To neighbors she seems like a sweet little old lady, but Maud has no qualms about sticking up for herself against those who would take advantage of her—and people around her keep coming to untimely ends.
My Thoughts: It took me a little while to find the rhythm for this collection of stories. Maybe because of the translation? 'Not sure. Once I was in sync though, I really enjoyed the book. Maud is quite the character. She is a retired teacher who loves travelling. When at home, peace and quiet is all she wants. Maud is willing to do whatever it takes to get it. I almost felt guilty cheering for her. Almost. I mean, seriously, who wouldn't enjoy more peace and quiet? This is a small book and only took me an afternoon of surprised smiles to get it read. If you have a sense of humor and root for the elderly underdog, you will probably like this book.

It isn't fiction, but a book about one family's adventures moving to a homestead in New England and learning to make their own maple syrup.
