The north side of our front yard is a certified National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat. Really! We have a certificate! You can do the same by providing food, water, cover and places for wildlife to raise their young. It is so much fun to see all of the critters that stop by for a visit. I have a series of posts to show you our Garden Guests.
Visiting today is a Mourning Dove. This isn't a great photo. The beam of sunshine on the dove is making the colors lighter than they actually are. Several of you have asked about the difference between Mourning Doves and Turtle Doves. To see my photos of a Turtle Dove, click HERE. Maybe that will help everyone see the difference. There was also a previous post that pictured an immature Mourning Dove. Check out the baby HERE where the colors are more true.
Mourning Doves can be attracted by offering mixed bird feed. Millet seems to be their favorite.

I love that song!! I never knew it was mourning dove - I always thought it was morning dove. I learn something new everyday.

ReplyDeleteWhat's happening in my backyard? There's an ignorant shrew that keeps running up to my cats when they're outside with me. I've been able to save it each time. Shrews are evidently not the most savvy of nature's creatures.
I always love seeing your yard visitors! Doves are very pretty.
ReplyDeleteWe had found a domesticated one in a parking lot years ago. It had been injured and the owner must've just dropped it off. We took it in and kept it for awhile. Eventually we gave it to a friend.
