Garden Guest: Turtle Dove

The north side of our front yard is a certified  National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat.  Really!  We have a certificate!  You can do the same by providing food, water, cover and places for wildlife to raise their young.  It is so much fun to see all of the critters that stop by for a visit.  I've begun a new series of posts to show you our Garden Guests.

If you would like to see more, check my Gardening Page!

What do you think of this amazing creature?  This is a Turtle Dove.  The ones that visit us tend to prefer the scratch grains we feed our chickens.  Sometimes they land on the platform bird feeders.

  1. I think ours are mourning doves. How can I tell the difference? I love them because I am hard of hearing and I can actually hear these birds...especially when they take off!

  2. Yes, please tell us the difference as I have had tons as of late at our feeders. I love both the sound they make & when they leave the feeder, their fluttering is amazing!!

  3. Hello, Jviola79! I had answered Danni via email, but it sounds like I need to add some more info here, too! Thank you for that feedback. The above photos are Turtle Doves. I think the most distinctive marking on them is the dark band on their necks. They are generally a lighter color than Mourning Doves and slightly larger. Please let me know if you have more questions! -Marci @ Stone Cottage Adventures
