Embracing this Season

November has arrived.  Temperatures a falling along with the leaves.  It's time for football, sweaters, and hot cocoa.

Today, I am joining these lovely and talented bloggers for my favorite kind of challenge!

Shall we begin with the supply list?

All of this was already on hand

A scrap of 1" x 12" wooden plank cut 48 inches long, painted soft gray

Scraps of plywood cut into 9" x 9" squares

Leftover pots of paint

Spray Paint (in case you change your mind like I did)

Paint brush, Stencil sponge

Cup holder hooks pulled from old scarf hanger no longer in use

Cardstock I don't really like anymore

Polka Dot Headband

Since the long 48 inch plank of wood is painted gray, my first color choice for the smaller squares was a soft gold.  I love grays and yellows together.  With the song lyric "amber waves of grain" playing in my head, I mixed yellow, orange and soft brown.  Using a sponge brush, I swirled them together right on the boards.

GAH!  Is anyone else thinking about dirty diapers now?  Is it just me?  BLECH!

Undaunted, out came spray paint in soft peach.  It took a couple of coats to cover my gaff.
;-)  This ain't my first rodeo.  ;-)

Next, I made stencils using my DIY cutting machine and cardstock I had on hand.  I like to work with the small stencil sponges using the tiniest bit of paint. Since cardstock can get saturated and bleed, it is imperative to let each coat of paint dry completely before adding the next layer.  I'm usually happy with three to four coats of paint for a clear stencil.

Next, cup holder hooks were twisted into the 1" x 12" plank so the letters could be placed and replaced.  It was Handsome Husband's idea to make the letters interchangeable.  I married a genius!  One of my sweet friends has already given me a darling idea for December's four letter word.  I'm super excited to have a new sign whenever I want, embracing each season as it comes!

Here's a little tip to extend the life of your Halloween decor.  Simply turn the spooky faces toward the wall and use the blank side of those lovely pumpkins.  Mix them up with some gourds or squash for color variety.

My black and white polka dot headband was tied at the top for a quirky little bow.  (It was made from a $1 bandana.  If you'd like to see the tutorial, just click HERE .)

The "A" was a smidge crooked in this photo.  That cup holder hook on the right side was later straightened.

It's time to see how my blogging friends are embracing this challenge!

  1. I love this sign, Marci! And I think it might have looked great in the poop color too! Lol! I liked that you used a stencil and not a cutting machine. It's all about the basics!

  4. I love that sign and it is so easy to think of four letter words for the seasons that you can interchange! Pinned.

  11. It turned out so beautifully. I love what you say about the initial issues. Sometimes you have an idea in your head and then once it's done everything is all wrong!! It's a good thing you didn't abandon it but gave the idea a second chance!
