Book Review: The Widow of Pale Harbor

by Hester Fox

Partial synopsis from Good Reads A town gripped by fear. A woman accused of witchcraft. Who can save Pale Harbor from itself?

My thoughts:  Part historical fiction, part mystery and part romance, this book was devoured quickly in one weekend.  Historical fiction is a favorite genre for me, so I definitely loved that part of the book, especially references to art and literature of the era.  As the mystery unravels, I never enjoy descriptions of crimes, in this case, it's harassment and murder.  BLECH!  I did figure out the perpetrator, though, a few pages before the author reveals the reasons behind their anger and hatred.  As for the romance, that part was pretty predictable, but it's hard to resist a handsome fellow riding into town and saving the day, isn't it?  ;-)  Overall, I did enjoy most of the book.

This book was from our library's book club reading list.  That particular month I actually got to attend the meeting!  Exciting times!  I love hearing others' thoughts on a book.  Our group discussion was pretty lively with mixed reviews.  Many felt that even though this particular book may never become one of their favorites, it was a nice way to spend cold, winter evenings!  Most of the members' favorite character was Helen.  We kind of want to hear this story from her perspective.  I love that our librarian says, "There is book for every reader and a reader for every book."  'So true.

What have you been reading?
