Sanderlings, Maybe?

Please keep in mind I am from Arkansas and don't know much about beach birds.  ;-)

If my research is correct, these little cuties are called Sanderlings, but please feel free to correct me!  ;-)  I am curious if they have lots of common names?

We loved watching them search and snack along the shoreline.

These photos are from our visit to Fort Morgan, Alabama way back in February.

The Sanderlings were working very quickly at the waters edge

and then they were gone.

If you enjoy these types of posts, I have a series of nature photos on my GARDEN PAGE.  I hope you have time to stay for a spell.

  1. Those birds are adorable! They remind me of the dunlins that stopover here on their way to the nesting grounds each spring. :-)

  3. In their innocence they are so sweet, just carrying out their needs, not bothering anything or anybody.. sure are cute little critters. I used to love watching them at beaches in San Diego or the lake in MT.

  4. Lovely photos Marci, we call them Strandlopertjies (little beach walkers) in Afrikaans and I can spend hours just watching them on the beach.

  6. Jeez, I wouldn't even look twice since I'd assume they were sandpipers or gulls or something, lol. They're pretty amusing little critters.
