Garden Guest: Blue Jay

The north side of our front yard is a certified  National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat.  Really!  We have a certificate!  You can do the same by providing food, water, cover and places for wildlife to raise their young.  It is so much fun to see all of the critters that stop by for a visit.  I've begun a new series of posts to show you our Garden Guests.

If you would like to see more, check my Gardening Page!

This handsome fellow is a Blue Jay.  These birds are pretty loud and can be aggressive, especially toward cats.  If you would like to attract them, try suet.

They seem to visit our dogs' bowls more than the bird feeders though!  You can see this guy is munching from a suet feeder.

For some blogging music how about Jamie Grace?  I love her voice!  Here she is with "It's a Beautiful Day"!

So, what's happening in your backyard?

  1. Hey Marci, love the photos! We have a mocking bird that chases our cat. It's so funny to watch them play back and forth. Brave bird! We also have morning Doves. And we raise waterfowl... Swans, ducks, geese, peacocks, it goes on and on at my house.

  3. Oh I miss the bluejays that I fed peanuts to on my deck at my old house. I guess I'll have to train these town jays to come eat peanuts! Your pics are fabulous as always!

  4. Blue jays are HUGE around here and kinda scary but pretty :) We have a lot of cardinals here too. Someone stole on of my sunflowers, a squirrel I assume, so hope the birds will get some of the seeds.

  6. You captured your visitor so well, beautiful color and great photos. We had blue jays come every Spring to make nest under pole shed roof over hang at our place in MT several years ago, we left there in April 1999.
We have several sets of love birds come to our back yard now to eat chickens food/snack they get twice a day. They've gotten quite brave about coming close to us. Don't seem to be afraid of our cat, our chickens (5) sure aren't, he's afraid of them. They'll go right up to cat and study him. We don't have to worry about cat chasing chickens or birds. We're animal lovers, feed other birds at feeders in back yard also. Chickens aren't afraid of our dog either, he takes care of them. A chicken hawk was lurking and he kept barking at it and chasing it when it tried to land in back yard by chickens..
