Garden Guest: Nuthatch

There's still time to enter the Summer Gardening Giveaway!

The north side of our front yard is a certified  National Wildlife Federation Backyard Habitat.  Really!  We have a certificate!  You can do the same by providing food, water, cover and places for wildlife to raise their young.  It is so much fun to see all of the critters that stop by for a visit.  I've begun a new series of posts to show you our Garden Guests.

If you would like to see more, check my Gardening Page!

This small gray beauty is a Nuthatch.  I love their shiny black eyes!  Our children call them "upside down birds" because you frequently see them working over trees with their heads facing the ground.

They can be attracted with sunflower seeds.  I was thrilled to get these photos as Nuthatches move quickly and are constantly on the go.

It's been a while since I posted any blogging music.  One of my fave groups right now is The Band Perry.  Here they are with "Done".  I really like the La-di-da part!  Oh, and in case you are wondering, Handsome Husband is not in any kind of trouble, this is a perfect work out song!  ;-)

So, what's happening in your backyard?

  2. I adore birds and this one is just gorgeous. It's also pretty funny that it hangs up side down - I had no clue birds did that! found via Turn It Up Tuesday

  7. I'll have to ask the bird man that writes a column in our weekly free paper about nut hatches, so pretty. Makes me want to cuddle it, birds are so sweet looking. That one has gorgeous coloring.
Did you make the bird feeder?
We live in western CO so will have to do a search to find out if they come to this part of country. I was feeding birds out in very back of yard but neighbors car/truck was getting messed on and he didn't like it, understandable. Birds can be quite messy. Glad you shared beautiful photos of gorgeous bird Happy summer days

  9. I like nuthatches though the UK nuthatches are differently coloured. 'Upside down birds' is a brilliant description :-)

  11. Your nuthatch is so blue in coloring. I think ones who visit here in summer (I live in the west) are tan/brown. My back yard isn't certified, but it definitely attracts wildlife.

  12. Such a cute little visitor! We have them here in WA state, but they are brown and maybe a bit smaller. I've never been fast enough to photograph one - good capture!
